Overview: Let’s create a new follow-up campaign with the goal of recruiting previously identified supporters to an upcoming volunteer recruitment call. First, I’ll pick the first campaign I want to target. After that, I’ll decide which contact filters to apply. Because I want to cast a wide net and recruit anyone who might be willing to attend our call, I’ll utilize the contacts matching any of these filters contact filterAs a reminder, this means we will target everyone who was marked with any of the selected statuses. Lastly, I’ll choose which tags and survey answers I want to apply for this campaign.

Step by step instructions:

Step 1) Select “Follow-Up Campaign” in the “contacts” drop down inside your campaign to begin your contact targeting.

Follow-up campaigns can be accessed from the “Contacts” section of your campaign.

Step 2) Choose your campaigns: Select the campaign with contacts you want to target. To capture as many potential volunteers as possible, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to add all of the voter ID campaigns that were run. But for simplicity sake, we’ll start by just adding “Voter ID Round 3”.

You can scroll through a dropdown of past campaigns, or search for your campaigns by name.

Step 3) Choose a contact filter: After selecting your campaign, you’ll need to apply a contact filter. You have the option of texting all contacts from the campaign, or to customize your targeting based on tags or specific survey responses matching all the filters you apply, or any of the filters you apply. For this campaign, we’ll select “any of these filters”.

List of the four types of contact filters available in follow-up campaigns

Step 4) Choose a tag and survey answer filter: After selecting any filters to cast the widest net possiblewe’ll select “add a filter” to add contact tags and survey answers for this campaign.

Select a filter to add additional types of follow-up filters.

Step 5) Choose tag filters: The first filter we’ll apply is anyone marked with an “Enthusiastic Supporter” tag. Remember, this is just an example tag- you might not utilize these specific tags and you can add whichever tags work best for you. To do this, first we’ll select “Tags” in the “Add a Filter” field.

Select “Tags” to access previously applied tags

Then we’ll select the “Enthusiastic Supporter” from the dropdown menu to ensure we are texting anyone who might be willing to join our volunteer call.

View of the tags drop down. You can select as many as you like.

Step 6) Choosing survey answers: Next, we’ll want to include everyone who said “Yes” to supporting Brendan Wiles for Dog Catcher, plus anyone who agreed to volunteer. To do this, we’ll select the initial questions to view and select the corresponding survey answers. Click the “+ Add a Filter” and then the initial question “Will they support Brendan?”

Select the questions to access the corresponding survey answers

Be sure to select all the survey answers you want included. You can select as many as you like!

                                                                                      Select the appropriate survey answers.

At this point, the follow-up campaign is nearly finished. If we were to launch this campaign now, we would target anyone on the Voter ID Round 3 campaign who was marked with an “enthusiastic supporter” tag, plus anyone who indicated they were a Strong or Lean supporter. But we probably also want include anyone who agreed to volunteer, so we’ll add that filter next.

View of our follow-up campaign so far

Step 7) Choose additional survey answer filters: To add another filter, select “add a filter” and select the next question and corresponding answer you want to apply. We’ll select “Yes volunteer” to include those responders, and our first follow up campaign’s targeting is finished.

Select additional survey questions to access additional survey answers

Select the survey answer. Again, you can choose as many as you like.

Dropdown with the corresponding survey answers.

Here’s what it looks like when it’s all done. You can see I have selected any individuals on the Voter ID Round 3 campaign who were marked with an enthusiastic supporter tag, anyone who answered Yes / Lean Yes to supporting Brendan, plus anyone who was marked as a Yes Volunteer.

Final view of the follow-up campaign

Step 8) Save and design the rest of your campaign: That’s it! The targeting is now finished. Select “Save and go to the next section” to save your data, and then go on to finish setting up the rest of your text campaign.

Select “save and go to next section” to finish your campaign targeting.
