SHAFT Violations
A SHAFT violation refers to sending a text message that includes content related to Sex, Hate, Alcohol, Firearms, and Tobacco, which is considered highly restricted and prohibited by most mobile carriers.
Including SHAFT language in your texts often results in message blocking or account suspension. Essentially, it's a violation of the guidelines set by the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) regarding prohibited content in text messages. To avoid SHAFT violations, carefully review your SMS content to ensure it does not include language or keywords included in the following categories.
Legality isn’t a consideration. Simply using words like “weed” or "marijuana" will prevent your texts from being delivered. To highlight petitions or advocacy on these topics, include a link that takes the recipient to a website.
Note: Gun advocacy groups don’t fall under "firearms."
Including the following content in text messages will also result in message blocking or account suspension:
High-Risk Financial Services
Examples: Payday loans, short-term high-interest loans, student loans, cryptocurrency, stocks, and investing platforms.
Notes:
"Third-party" loans are from anyone other than the loan servicer (e.g., auto or mortgage loans).
First-party loans (from the lender themselves) are allowed if they’re not promotional.
Stocks, investing, or cryptocurrency businesses can only send 2FA or transactional messages.
Debt Collection or Forgiveness
Examples: Debt collection, debt consolidation, credit/debt repair.
Notes:
Allowed if the messaging originates from the party owed the debt.
Third-party debt collection is not allowed unless the business has direct consent from users.
Debt consolidation and credit repair programs are prohibited, even with consent.
“Get Rich Quick” Schemes
Examples: Pyramid schemes, mystery shopping, deceptive work-from-home programs.
Note: This encompasses schemes promising maximum and/or guaranteed financial gains for minimal effort.
Gambling
Examples: Casino apps, betting websites, raffles, sports picks.
