The Script Variants feature lets you create multiple initial message scripts within a single campaign to perform A/B tests. It can also help reduce carrier message filtering by adding variation to your outbound messages. Scale to Win Text automatically rotates through your script variants and tracks performance so you can identify the most impactful variant.
Adding Multiple Script Variants
To create multiple script variants, open your campaign and navigate to the Initial Message step. Write your first script variant in the Initial Message Text box. To add your next variant, click the + Add a Variant button.
A new box labeled Variant 2 will appear, and you can add your second initial message script. Repeat these steps to add as many variants as you’d like. To delete a variant, click the trash can icon next to it. Remember to click Save so you don’t lose your work!
Previewing Multiple Script Variants
You can preview any script variant from the Initial Messages step by clicking the Message Preview button below it.
This shows you what the script variant will look like, and if you’ve included contact fields it will preview those variables in action.
You can also send a preview text of a specific variant to your phone by clicking the blue Send a Preview Text button. For more information on sending preview texts, including how to check their delivery status, click here.
Sending Multiple Script Variants
Once your script variants are loaded and your campaign is started, you’re ready to start texting! If you’d like to send right away, click the Send button on the campaign home page. If you’d like to schedule your texts for a later date or time, click the Schedule button.
Next, choose one of the following sending options (available for both immediate and scheduled sends):
Send to a Portion of Your List
Send to Your Full List
Autosend Based on ROI (available only if you’ve set up the ActBlue Donation Webhook)
You can find more information on sending texts here.
Once your send begins, Scale to Win Text will automatically rotate through your script variants. Each variant is sent to a roughly equal portion of contacts.
For example:
2 variants to a full list → each sent to about half the list
3 variants to a 30,000 contact portion → each sent to about 10,000 contacts
Because the rotation is randomized, the distribution may not be perfectly even, but it will be close.
Data Panels for Multiple Script Variants
Once you’ve started your campaign, you’ll see a preview and data panel for each of your script variants on the campaign home page.
At the top of the page, you’ll also see a data panel that shows the performance of the entire campaign.
Click More Results in the bottom-right corner of any data panel to open a dropdown with additional information.
Once texts start going out, the data panels will begin populating with results, which you can use to compare how each variant is performing! The data panel for the campaign will give you a high-level view of your entire send, aggregating data across all script variants.
You will always be able to see the following data for any send:
Reply Rate
Filter Rate
Opt Out Rate
Total Sent
Estimated Cost (full campaign data panel only)
Initial Message Cost
Opt Outs
Automatic Opt Outs
If you’ve set up link shortening in Scale to Win Text and are using that shortlink in your texts, you’ll also be able to see:

If you’ve set up the ActBlue Donation Webhook and are allowing Scale to Win Text to append the ?refcode2w=XXXXXX parameter to your links (you can modify this in the Settings page for each of your subaccounts), you’ll also be able to see:
Total Raised
Estimated ROI

Editing, Adding, and Removing Script Variants After Sending to a Portion
To make changes to or delete script variants after sending to a segment of your list, click the Edit button in the top right corner of the campaign home page.
Next, open the Initial Message step. From here, you can edit any existing variants, delete them by clicking the trash can icon, or add new variants. When you’re done, click Save.
Note: Once you delete a variant and click Save, it cannot be restored. If you recreate the same variant, Scale to Win Text will treat it as a new variant. This means any data from texts sent using the new variant will be displayed in a different data panel from the original.
Click View Campaign at the top of the page to return to the campaign home page. If you deleted any variants that were already sent, you’ll now see a dropdown menu labeled Past Script Variants below your current variant(s).
Click this dropdown to view your deleted script variant(s) and their data panel(s). These panels will continue to update as recipients of those variants continue to reply, click, donate, and/or opt-out in response.
Note: The Past Script Variants dropdown menu will only be available if you've deleted variants after sending them out to at least some of your contacts.
If you edited an existing variant, the updated script will appear under the Script Variants heading on the campaign home page. Any data collected from texts sent after the edit will be combined with earlier performance data for the same variant. For example, if you update a donation link and/or refcode and then send the variant to more of your list, the data panel will display results from both the original and the updated version of the text.
If you want to send the same script variant again but track the results separately, create a new variant with the same copy, delete the original, and click Save. The original will appear under Past Script Variants and the new variant’s data will be tracked independently, even if both variants use the same links or refcodes.
