The Custom Fields Feature allows you to add custom contact fields to your Short Code subscribers. When you have custom field values in your subscriber list, you can use the custom fields as merge fields in your initial texts and response scripts.

Adding Custom Fields to Short Code Subscribers

  1. In the pop-up window, click Create Custom Field.  

  2. Enter a field name and choose a type: Text, Number, Single Select, or True/False. Once created, click Create Custom Field.

    • For Text customer fields, use the max character length default or update max length

    • For Single Select custom fields, add the dropdown options you want to include

  1. To edit a custom field, click the pencil icon next to it. 
    You can edit: 

    • Custom Field Name

    • For Text fields: Max length

    • For Single Select Fields: The options listed 

Note: If you remove an option, it will be removed from all contacts it was assigned to and left blank on the record.

Custom Field Type cannot be changed after creation. To modify a custom field's type, you must delete the existing field and create a new one. 


Upload Custom Field Values To Your Subscribers 

  1. Navigate to your Short Code page and click the Add Subscribers button.

  1. Choose File Upload as your Upload Method.

  1. Upload your CSV including a column for your custom field.

  2. Map column names to your custom fields. 

  3. Click Upload.

Note: If you are re-uploading existing subscribers, we will append new field information to the contact and overwrite existing information.



Filter & Target Subscribers by Location
Organizations with a Short Code sending number can filter and target their subscribers by state or zip code during campaign setup, enabling targeted messaging to specific geographic groups.

Add Location Data To Short Code Subscribers

  1. Navigate to your Short Code page and click + Add Subscribers.

  1. Choose between:

  • File Upload (CSV)

  1. Select File Upload from the Upload Method dropdown.

  1. Upload CSV with optional location fields.

  2. Preview your list and map fields then click Upload.
    Note: Uploading a CSV with location fields will automatically backfill the location data in pre-existing subscriber contact records.

  • Or Text Entry (Manual)

  1. Select Text Entry.

  2. Add phone number (required). Location fields can be optionally added.

  3. Click Upload.

Note: By default, a welcome message is sent to new subscribers. This feature can be disabled if you are migrating existing opted-in subscribers. Alternatively, you can keep the feature enabled and then manually disable the opt-in message when entering subscribers or uploading via CSV.

ActBlue and ActionKit Subscribers
The location data for new ActBlue and ActionKit subscribers will automatically populate for new contacts imported via integration. The location data for existing ActBlue and ActionKit subscribers will automatically be backfilled in the pre-existing subscriber contact records.

API Subscribers
Location field data can be included for new API subscribers. When you update existing API subscribers with new location fields in your system, the sync will automatically backfill location data in pre-existing subscriber contact records. To view your API documentation, go to your Organization Settings, navigate to the API Keys page, then click View API Documentation.



How To Target Subscribers Based On Location

  1. Navigate to your Campaigns page and click + New Campaign.

  2. In the Sending Numbers step, choose a Short Code phone number.

  1. Proceed to the Load Contacts step and select Short Code Subscribers as the method for loading contacts.


  1. Click Filter Subscribers.


5. Use filters to narrow your subscriber list by State (multi-select)or Zip Code and click Import Filtered Short Code Subscribers.


6. Review the summary of your filtered list. If correct, click Continue.


7. Should your filters yield no matching contacts, select Clear Settings / Retry to adjust your criteria.


Proceed with building your campaign. Location fields are mappable on the Contact Mapping step and also appear as Merge Fields for use in Initial Message creation.
